Barely three months after the three main non-teaching staff unions in the
university sector suspended their strike, there are indications that the
Workers may next week, resume the suspended strike, after what they described
as failure of government to honour agreement reached with their unions. The
unions had in March suspended their previous strike action which coincidentally,
lasted for three months. The unions included non-Academic Staff Union of
Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), the Senior Staff Association of
Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and National Association of Academic
Technologists (NAAT) Speaking to journalists in Abuja, NASU general secretary
and vice president of NLC, Peters Adeyemi said the government has failed to
honour agreement reached with the unions which led to the suspension of the
strike.
LEADERSHIP recalled that the unions had in December, 2017, embarked on an
indefinite strike action to press for the implementation of the 12 demands
including the 2009, 2012 and 2017 agreements signed between the unions and the
Federal Government Adeyemi said having exhausted every avenue to pressure the
government to implement the agreement it reached with the unions, the union
leaders have scheduled a meeting for next Wednesday after which a decision will
be taken. He said, “What we are trying to do is to tell our members that if
after our meeting of 4th of July, nothing happens, we will resume the suspended
strike.” Adeyemi said the main Labour centre in the country, the NLC, has been
mobilizing workers to ensure thy get their Permanent Voters Card to ensrue they
participate actively in the 2019 election to ensrue they vote out bad leaders
He said, “Two, we are telling our members to go and get their PVCs
dready.
The only way you can check a government that is insensitive is to vote those in
government out. We have been n this issue for several years and the only “As
trade union, we appear to be confused with what to do. We dialogue with
government, they sign MoU, they say in five weeks everything will happen. And
after the five weeks, nothing happens and you try to access them they are
inaccessible “So we have told our members that after our meeting of 4th of
July, which will be holding with all our members across the country, we will
take a resolution to resume the suspended strike. And then we encourage them to
go get register and get ready for the election We are saying, all workers
across Nigeria should go register and get ready. So that in those states, were
governors take issue of payment of salary as secondary issue, issie that is not
important tey hous go emasse and vote those governors out.
